How to cook bulgur: basic rules and secrets

How to prepare bulgur

Usually bulgur is not washed before cooking. If you still want to do this, put it in a sieve and rinse lightly under running water. Then dry the cereal to make it more crumbly.

Bulgur is better to pre-fry for 2-4 minutes in butter or vegetable oil. Take about one tablespoon of oil per glass of cereal.

Roasting will give bulgur a slight nutty flavor.

Groats can be fried in a heavy-bottomed pan or in a frying pan over medium heat, as well as in a multicooker bowl in the “Frying” mode.

Roasting

Before putting the bulgur in the prepared dishes, you can fry vegetables in it until soft, such as onions and carrots. In this case, the cereals are boiled together with vegetables. They will make it even tastier and more aromatic.

How much water to take

Liquids during cooking should be twice as much as cereals. That is, for 1 cup of bulgur, take 2 cups of water, which must be hot.

How to cook bulgur

Keep in mind that when cooking bulgur increases by 2-3 times. So choose the right size bowl.

In a pot or pan

Pour the cereal with water, add salt and mix. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to low. Cover the pot with a lid and cook the bulgur for 15-20 minutes until it has absorbed all the water.

In a slow cooker

Add water and salt to the cereal and mix. Close the lid of the multicooker and cook the bulgur in the “Rice / Cereal” or “Pilaf” mode for about 30 minutes.

in the microwave

Frying bulgur in the microwave, of course, will not work. So you can either skip this step, or do it ahead of time on the stove.

Place the bulgur in a glass or ceramic bowl. Add water and salt and stir. Cover the pot with a lid and cook for 2-3 minutes at maximum power. Then leave the container with bulgur in a closed microwave for 15 minutes.

What spices can be added

Rosemary, thyme, marjoram, paprika, curry, cinnamon and star anise will help diversify the taste of bulgur. You can use other spices to your taste. They must be added along with salt.
